Saint Cecilia Catholic Church
Glen Carbon, Illinois
Many of the ministries at St. Cecilia's would not be possible without our volunteers. Please consider sharing your time, talent and treasures with your fellow parishioners. Volunteering has genuine rewards that will make a difference in your life and the lives of others. Here are three benefits of your volunteering:
Make a start now by committing an hour of your time each week to our parish! It's easy - follow this simple two step process:
In continuing the efforts of the U.S. Bishop's Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, we have a responsibility to keep children safe from the grave harm of child sexual abuse. In the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois, all volunteers and employees age 18 years and older are required to complete the Safe Environment Training for Adults®. This training session assists adults in identifying the warning signs and effects of child sexual abuse, strategies for maintaining a safe environment including review of the diocesan code of conduct, The Policy on Working with Minors, and communicating their concerns.
In addition, we offer other recommended supplemental training programs in which caring adults can learn to keep children safe on the internet, including topics on youth trends, intervention and prevention strategies and laws regarding cyberbullying and sexting.
In doing so, it assists the Catholic Church and its members in defending human life at every stage keeping our parish programs safe for all people.
Please contact the parish office for information on the next available training session.
Liturgical ministry is an excellent opportunity to fulfill your baptismal call of service to one another. Our liturgies should utilize the talents and gifts that God has given this community to the fullest extent. Parishioner contributions help our liturgies to be truly life-giving celebrations. Please prayerfully consider joining one of these ministries:
Music plays an important role at St. Cecilia’s (patron Saint of musicians). Parishioners of all ages volunteer their time in a variety of roles – providing leadership and special music for the liturgy as cantors, choir members, and instrumentalists. Those involved in the music ministry offer the parish their time and talents, enhancing the liturgy through beautiful and uplifting music. At the same time, many find that being part of the music ministry is a good way to make new friends and find community in a large and busy parish. If you have a passion for music, please consider getting involved in this important ministry.
This ministry helps in designing, planning, and decorating the Church for the liturgical year and for various liturgical celebrations. Through the use of flowers, coloring, fabric, statuary and design, we enhance the worship environment through the medium of art. We welcome those who enjoy creating an enhanced environment of worship to share their gifts with us.
The Food Pantry provides, free of charge, groceries for people who live locally. We receive support from many groups and individuals in the Glen Carbon area for food donations as well as monetary donations. A group of willing volunteers serve every Wednesday to help patrons get bags of food. Each week several people shop to keep the shelves stocked with necessary items. We always need volunteers. The pantry is located within St. Cecilia Church, downstairs in the Parish Hall.
Our funeral luncheon volunteers play a special role in comforting those who are grieving by preparing a dish, serving as part of a team, and cleaning up after the luncheon.
These parishioners invite fellowship to continue after the Sunday morning liturgies on the first Sunday of every month (except during Lent) in the Parish Hall. They extend hospitality to the community by providing coffee, donuts, and a smile. The ministry is a wonderful opportunity for families to minister together.
A group that counts the funds collected at Mass each week.
The purpose of this ministry is to ask God, through prayer, for the resolution of a situation. This purpose is accomplished by publishing the requestor's wishes by e-mail to the members of the Prayer Chain. The St. Cecilia Prayer Chain prays for those for whom a prayer request has been made, through parishioners, friends or even strangers.
Quilters meet every week at the Family Life Center. They work together to create beautiful quilts that are raffled for fundraising. Quilts are also available for purchase. Experience is not necessary – if you can hand sew and use a thimble, we can teach you to quilt.
Rosary Makers meet once a month at the FLC to make rosaries together and have a potluck lunch. They also make rosaries at home.
This group leads our parishioners to develop a parish where people come to know their vocation - a culture of vocations.
This committee examines and implements ways to give our visitors a friendly, inviting experience. We also extend well wishes and encouragement to those in need through our card ministry.
