Sacramental Rites

The Sacred liturgy and celebration of the Sacraments are the most sacred and important actions entrusted to the Church, for it is here that the “work of our redemption is accomplished” (Sacrosanctum Concilium n2), where we encounter the mystery of Christ and the real nature of the Church. It is in and through the Holy Sacraments that we encounter Christ in a unique way.

The Church asks that we prepare for the sacraments so that their celebration be fruitful, dignified and a true encounter with Christ.

At St. Cecilia's, we have a variety of catechetical courses and programs for sacramental preparation.

For further information on all of these rites, please contact the Parish Office at 618-288-3200

Baptisms

Congratulations on the new life in your family. Preparation for the Baptism sacrament involves special instruction for parents. Notification to the parish must take place as soon as possible before the child is born and an appointment made for a Baptismal Preparation Class.

Reconciliation

Jesus on the cross already has "done our work for us." In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we simply give God a chance to share with us the infinite merits of His Son. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated every Saturday from 3:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. or at any other time by appointment.

1st Reconciliation, Confirmation & 1st Communion

In the Diocese of Springfield, IL, the Sacraments of Christian Initiation for children are offered in the original sequence:

Baptism   ~   Confirmation   ~   Communion

In this "restored order", our 3rd grade students receive both Confirmation and 1st Eucharist at the same Mass.  The year prior, in preparation, they celebrate their 1st Reconciliation.

  • First Reconciliation 2nd grade students receive this sacrament at St. Cecilia.
  • Confirmation & 1st Communion 3rd grade students receive these sacraments from the Bishop at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield.

All students from St. Cecilia will prepare for and receive the sacraments together, regardless of where they attend school: parochial, public, or home.

Please contact the Coordinator of Religious Education to enroll in the preparation classes for these sacraments.

Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA)

Are you interested in becoming Catholic, or know someone who is? Then inquire with us about OCIA. The OCIA is a tour of faith:

  • through the initial stages of asking and seeking,
  • through beginning involvement with Christian/Catholic people,
  • through hearing the Gospel proclaimed and by faithful reflection and prayer on this Word of God,
  • through study and discussion about the Catholic experience,
  • through doubts and hesitations,
  • through discernment of God’s call for them as individuals,
  • through the steps of commitment,
  • through the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist)

The OCIA is for adults who:

  • are interested in learning more about the Catholic Church.
  • have never celebrated Baptism.
  • have celebrated Baptism in another faith and are interested in the Catholic Church.
  • are baptized Catholics who have not yet received Eucharist or Confirmation.
  • are married to a Catholic and attend Mass, but just don’t know what the next step is to become one of the Catholic faithful.

Please contact us if you are interested in attending OCIA!
